'God is good,' says $1.1M slots winner

A hard-working home health aide from Margate who couldn't afford health insurance for herself is now likely the biggest casino jackpot winner in Florida history.

Paulette Miles, 48, was down to her final spin on a progressive jackpot ''Cash Cow'' Class II electronic gaming machine at Seminole Coconut Creek Casino Saturday night when she won a record $1.1 million dollars.

''This is wonderful. Now instead of working seven days a week, I only have to work five days a week,'' said Miles, reached by The Miami Herald via her cellphone Wednesday morning as she was leaving the home of a patient she had been caring for overnight.

Miles, an immigrant from Jamaica, said she is using her winnings to pay off her mortgage, pay off her car loan, buy herself health and life insurance, help her niece with her college tuition, help her needy family in Jamaica and pay the taxes from her jackpot win.

Government Computer News

The Internal Revenue Service has reach a milestone in deploying the upgraded systems of its troubled modernization program by shifting more than 25 percent of its return processing to the Customer Account Data Engine (CADE).

The CADE technology helped process more than 5 million tax returns from individual filers as of March 7.

“This system is the centerpiece of our modernization efforts at the IRS,” said Richard Spires, IRS deputy commissioner for operations support. “[CADE] supports better customer service for the taxpayers, processes refunds quicker and helps the IRS better administer the nation’s tax system.”

The technology is intended to replace the IRS’ legacy Master File system, parts of which date back to the Kennedy administration.
